A message in a whisky bottle from 1887 was found under the floorboards

Amazing whisky bottle from 1887 found! Bottle mail is truly a phenomenon of the past. Nowadays, people send each other simple messages via a smartphone. No matter where you live, everyone can connect by phone. In the past, of course, this was not possible. A Scottish family from Edinburgh made a rare discovery in their house. They found something quite spectacular under the floor of their house: a message in a bottle! You don’t come across these sorts of findings every day. The big question is, what message was found in the bottle?

The plumber could not believe his eyes when he cracked open the floor of the house. Underneath the floor, he discovered another floor. The 135-year-old bottle was found on the second floor. What makes this discovery extra special is that the room in which the floor was located was 3 by 4.5 meters. The plumber himself could not believe that he had cut into the floor at the exact spot where the whisky bottle was hidden. It was a coincidence!

When the plumber found this bottle, he immediately informed the family living in the house about this extraordinary discovery. The family reacted with surprise and disbelief! The father told his children that a message in a bottle was found in their home. The children believed that it could be a treasure!

The family decided to remove the paper from the bottle. Yet this was easier said than done. When removing the paper from the bottle, the piece ripped. As a result, the decision was made to smash the whiskey bottle so that this piece of paper would remain intact. The whisky bottle turned out to be from two men who had laid the original floor in the house. The piece of paper was signed by them and dated: “James Ritchie and John Grieve laid this floor, but they did not drink the whiskey. October 6, 1887.”

The message that was found in the bottle may not have been very exciting,  but it is still a nice piece of history about the house! The family plans to store the piece of paper carefully. The idea is to frame the paper together with a piece from the whisky bottle. The family came up with the fun idea of continuing the tradition and putting another whisky bottle with a bill under the floor. Hopefully, future residents of the house will make another historical discovery someday, too!
